One of the most challenging things about life is that it’s unpredictable. And unfortunately, that means dental emergencies usually strike when you least expect them. Whether you are hit with a sudden toothache or a mouth injury, you need to act quickly to protect your smile and ease your discomfort. At Happy Tooth in Elmhurst, IL, we can provide the swift and compassionate care required to address your dental emergency.
What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?
While not every dental issue is an emergency, some situations demand immediate attention to alleviate pain and preserve oral health. Understanding which problems require urgent care–and which do not–could save you from unnecessary stress and further complications.
Common Examples of Dental Emergencies
- Severe Tooth Pain: Persistent or sharp pain could indicate an infection or a deep cavity. When it disrupts daily life, it’s time to call us.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: Acting quickly can often save a dislodged tooth. Prompt treatment is essential. Most patients and parents don’t realize that a call needs to be made within minutes of the occurrence.
- Cracked or Broken Teeth: Damage to the enamel may expose sensitive inner layers, leading to pain and potential infection, and often tooth loss.
- Swelling or Abscesses: Facial swelling or a gum abscess could indicate an advanced infection that needs immediate attention. Sometimes, depending on location and severity, this can be life-threatening.
- Lost Fillings or Crowns: The exposure of a lost filling or crown may lead to further decay, discomfort, or structural damage.
- Bleeding that you can’t stop: If you are experiencing bleeding that is difficult to stop, use gauze with pressure for about 10 minutes. Do this for up to 3 times. Keep in mind that sometimes if you spit, your saliva will be colored by the bleeding and might seem pink or red, but that does not mean that you’re still bleeding. You can also use a tea bag (black, like Lipton) which has tannins. Allow the tea bag to seep for 3-4 minutes in hot water. Then, bite on the tea bag for 10 minutes. If none of those are working, seek help in the emergency room.
If you’re unsure whether your situation qualifies as an emergency, it’s always better to call us for advice. Our team at Happy Tooth can help you determine the best course of action.
Steps to Take During a Dental Emergency
When an emergency happens, staying calm and acting quickly can significantly improve your outcome. Knowing exactly how to respond can help alleviate your pain and protect your oral health until you can visit us.
If you have unbearable pain, cannot stop the bleeding, or your swelling increases quickly, go to the emergency room for care.
Immediate Actions to Relieve Pain or Prevent Damage
- Toothaches: Use warm salt water to rinse the affected area and reduce inflammation. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help to manage your pain. However, avoid using aspirin directly on the gums, as this can cause irritation or even burn the soft tissue, causing more discomfort.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: Rinse the tooth with water, handling it only by the crown (not the root). Try placing it back into the socket or storing it in milk or saline solution until you can reach our office. Call the office IMMEDIATELY. The tooth needs to be placed back in the socket within the first hour for the best prognosis.
- Broken Teeth or Fillings: Rinse with water to clear debris, then cover any sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum to prevent further injury. Go to a local pharmacy to get temporary filling material and use it as directed.
- Swelling or Abscesses: A cold compress applied to the cheek can reduce swelling. Call our office immediately for an emergency appointment or further guidance. IMPORTANT: if this in any way gets in the way of your breathing or if the swelling is getting significantly larger with time, seek help from the emergency room.
